Understanding the Sterbegeld and how the fund works
This page explains, in general terms, what a death benefit is, who the fund is intended for, and the typical steps involved. It is educational in nature — it is not an offer, quote, or contract.
No products are sold and no payments are processed through this website. The details below are general explanations, not the terms of any individual membership. Actual eligibility, contributions, and benefit amounts are confirmed only through direct contact with our office.
A death benefit, explained plainly
A Sterbegeld, or death benefit, is a fixed sum paid out to a nominated beneficiary or the estate when an insured member of the fund passes away. Its purpose is straightforward: to make funds available quickly, at a time when families are often dealing with funeral costs and other immediate expenses.
Unlike a general life insurance policy sold on the open market, a Sterbekasse such as ours is a closed mutual association: cover is tied to belonging to a defined group — in this case, the workforce of Werk Völklingen and Werk Burbach — rather than being marketed broadly to the public.
From membership to a benefit being paid
Every case is handled individually by our office, but the general path looks like this.
Eligibility & membership
Membership is generally connected to employment or a prior working relationship with Saarstahl AG at Werk Völklingen or Werk Burbach.
Ongoing contribution
Members contribute to the fund over time, which is pooled and managed conservatively to keep the association financially sound.
Notification of a death
A family member or representative informs our office, typically with a death certificate and basic membership details.
Benefit payment
Once the claim is verified, the Sterbegeld is paid out to the nominated beneficiary or the estate without unnecessary delay.
A closed community, not a public product
Current employees
Members of the active workforce at Werk Völklingen and Werk Burbach form the core of the association.
Retirees & long-standing members
Many members maintain their connection to the fund well beyond their working years, in keeping with its mutual character.
Beneficiaries & families
Families and nominated beneficiaries are the ultimate recipients of the Sterbegeld when a claim is made.
Common questions about the fund
No. This website is for general information only. No membership, policy, or product can be purchased here, and nothing on this site should be read as a formal offer or quote.
Membership is generally tied to a connection with the Saarstahl workforce at Werk Völklingen or Werk Burbach. Because eligibility rules can vary, please contact our office directly to discuss your specific situation.
The association is a Versicherungsverein auf Gegenseitigkeit — a mutual insurance association under Section 53 of the German Insurance Supervision Act. It has no external shareholders and no field sales force, which keeps administrative costs low for members.
A family member or representative should contact our office as soon as reasonably possible, ideally with the death certificate and any membership documents on hand, so the claim can be reviewed.
Because these depend on individual circumstances and current fund terms, exact figures are provided directly by our office rather than published generally on this website.
